Going away for a few days on business trip? Worried about how you will maintain your new healthy lifestyle on the go? This was my problem as I prepared to go out of town for work this week. After working so hard at keeping to a strict fitness and healthy eating schedule, it can be a daunting task to prepare for a business trip. Long hours, meetings and minimal food choices are usually the hallmarks of work related travel. At first I felt overwhelmed and at a loss…until I focused on how important this was to me and complied a go to list.
Here are 6 ways to make healthy eating and fitness easy on a business trip.
1. Request a fridge in your hotel room
Call the hotel and reserve a fridge for your room at least 2 weeks in advance. Hotels often have a limited amount and they must be requested early in order to be guaranteed. Fees are usually very minimal or sometimes even complimentary depending on the hotel.
2. Fitness plan in advance
Take your usual routine and alter it. This means going through the details of your work schedule in advance and pre-planning your workouts. For this trip I have already scouted out online the local running trails and coordinated my runs with my down time. Sometimes this means running earlier or later in the day than I usually prefer but a run is a run! I’m just happy that at this time of year I can skip the hotel gym and run outside!
3. Meal plan in advance
This was a new one for me. I’m not usually one to carry food with me however this time I refused to resort to poor meal choices just because I wasn’t prepared. So I washed, chopped and prepped in advance lots of fresh food. When traveling these tend to be the items that are least available, so make it easy for yourself and bring them along! I also included paper napkins, cutlery and small take-a-long Tupperware so that eating comfortably in the hotel room or on-the-go is easy.
4. Pack smart
After packing the clothing items you need for work, pack your gym clothes on the top of your bag! If your workout clothing is the first thing you see when you open your suitcase, it will help to keep your goals at the forefront of your mind. You can even wear your gym clothes and running shoes to travel. This really leaves no room for excuses, you can workout as soon as you arrive at your destination!
5. Research local restaurants
Spend time before you leave researching the local eatery’s. If you already know where the local Thai restaurant is, you are more likely to go there for dinner rather than make a fast food option. If you know that you are scheduled for a dinner meeting, check the restaurant menu online before you go and decide what you will order.
6. Encourage your coworkers to join you
Discuss your new lifestyle with your coworkers before you go. Tell them how great you feel by following your new plan and encourage them to join you! Not only will you be helping someone else make better choices but by encouraging them to join you, it makes it easier for you to stay on track while you travel together.
